Mae On/Crazy Horse
Rock climbing- the main reason for going to Thailand, at least for me. Up north near Chiang Mai is a crag (Crazy Horse buttress) which sports fewer people, cooler temps and trustworthy bolts to keep one off the ground (bolts near the ocean corrode within a year and fail under body weight, which can lead to death). Being predisposed to avoid large pressing masses of humanity, I felt much more comfortable up north.
Betsy's foot wound kept her from climbing but was patient enough to belay Emily and I, filling the down time with feeding the ant lions lunch.
Mae On- the small farming community near which the crag is located. People here just farm or work at the hot spring, and English is not a second language for anyone we met. So it felt like the place would carry on whether or not we were there, which is a different vibe from the islands down south.
Emily, although not having climbed for a good deal of time, made short work of the steep climbs.
